A/N Unbeta'd all mistake mind, feel free to point them out. x

Before they had got into the chauffeur driven car, Rose Tyler had been flying around the flat like a golden whirling dervish of fury. She had always disliked the annual charity ball that her parents threw, but this year it had already been tainted by the recent stories in the press.

Her relationship with the media had never been an easy one. From the day she had arrived in this strange universe she had been subjected to interest from the rest of the world. Her father had warned her that there would be interest but it all turned sour after his niece, once the heiress to the Vitex millions pointed the finger and called Rose Tyler a fraud.

The media loved the scandal. Day after day, Rose found herself plastered over the news, with testimonies from teachers and doctors across London confirming that despite what her public records said none of them had ever taught the young Miss Tyler and none of them had ever treated her for any ailment.

Rose had experienced two years of the back and forth speculation. The media couldn’t find a soul who knew her as a child but there was the undeniable fact that the DNA results proved she was the Vitex Heiress.

Then her mystery man turned up a little under nine months ago. The gossip rags and red tops called him gorgeous, insane and an utter enigma. There was no dirt to dig up on Doctor James Noble. All they had to go on was that it was clear the couple were completely lost in each other.

It had been in the last few weeks that the media had increased their interest in the couple; they were gagging to see the couple at the Vitex Annual Ball. Just add some drama the press managed to find someone who was willing to claim that the gorgeous James Noble was having an affair with her behind Rose’s back and that the James was only in the relationship for Rose’s money.

As a result of the past few weeks, Rose and the Doctor now rode in the back of the limo in silence, staring out of the window watching London fly by. Rose had attempted to engage the Doctor in conversation, but he refused to take the bait when the conversation steered towards why he was annoyed about the situation. Both of them knew that the papers would soon be fined by the Complaints Commission for the lies, so Rose didn’t really see what the Doctor could be angry about.

Rose sighed to herself.

She glanced back at her lover taking in his tense posture before reaching out him. He startled when her hand covered his and he dragged his gaze away from the window to meet Rose’s warm amber eyes.

‘Nearly there,’ she told him. Of course, she knew he probably knew this but she could no longer bare the silence stretching between them. It was the silence that was becoming the soundtrack to their lives recently. She missed the cacophony of their life together. ‘Mum said we could go in though the back, the Press will be out front. I’m not really in the mood for a confrontation.’

‘Won’t stop them writing about us,’ the Doctor replied, turning away from Rose with a heavy sigh and looking back out the window.

It was a few seconds before Rose realised that he was still holding her hand, his thumb working circles over her knuckles. She smiled before unbuckling her seatbelt and sliding over the space between them. ‘Why do you care what anyone is saying about you?’ she asked, a mixture of curiosity and frustration tainting her voice.

The Doctor turned back to look at Rose. ‘I don’t care what they say about me,’ he told her, ‘I care about what they say about you. I care that every time a newspaper comes through the door your faces falls and you have to fight back the tears.’

Rose bit her lip but managed a smile.

The Doctor let go of her hand and wrapped his arm around her shoulders pulling her close, pressing a kiss into her hair. ‘Anyway, it ruined something I had in mind for you, but then I suppose I should know better than waiting for the perfect moment,’ he smiled into her hair. ‘Wait for the perfect moment and things get left unsaid.’

Rose pulled back enough to look the Doctor in the eyes. They didn’t often talk about all the missed chances of their time together on the TARDIS and she wondered why he was bringing it up. She was looking at him so intently that she didn’t notice that he had slid his other hand into the pocket of his tux jacket.

‘Rose,’ he continued, looking in her eyes, ‘I love you, have done for quite a while and I plan to continue loving you for a long time,’ he paused as she smiled a brilliant and radiant smile. ‘Rose Tyler, will you marry me?’

Between them, pinched between his fingers was a ring of stunning beauty and Rose heard herself gasp. The square cut diamond had a slight pink hue to it and it seemed to balance on the setting of the ring rather than sit.

She must have stared at the ring for a long time, because she registered the Doctor speaking to her again, just her name, but it was enough to snap her out of her wonderment. She tore her eyes away from the rock and up to the dark chocolate eyes of the man she knew she would love long after she was gone from the world.

Rose brought her hand up to cradle the Doctor’s cheek and she realised she was on the verge of crying. She smiled and blinked, letting tears drip from her eyes. ‘Yes,’ she whispered, before leaning forward to seal her promise with a kiss.

It was the most tender kiss they had ever shared and Rose thought she would melt into the Doctor’s arms. She felt true bliss; her whole body felt warm and content. Regretfully, they broke apart and the Doctor took her hand and slid the ring in place. They both gazed down at the symbol on her finger before melting into another kiss, first tender before erupting into passion.

They were interrupted by the intercom. ‘Did you want dropping off around the back, Miss Tyler?’

The newly engaged couple looked at each other, but the answer was easy. ‘No, the front will do fine.’

The photographers and journalists of London circled The Savoy Hotel like vultures, waiting to pick the flesh of the bones of anyone heading into the ball and they knew that their two favourite targets were likely to be there tonight.

Therefore there was no disappointment as the second Tyler car rolled down the street towards the entrance. Cameras were lifted as the car came to a halt; they started to flash as the valet opened the door. Questions were shouted as the first occupant got out the car; journalist shouting for a sound bite on the recent revelations about infidelities. Doctor James Noble ignored them as he turned and held out his hand for his bride to be.

As her hand clasped his, zoom lenses were focus as the photographers caught sight of the rock on Rose Tyler’s hand. More questions were screamed, but with heads held high Doctor James Noble and Rose Tyler swept past them, smiling at no one but their selves. Within moments the doors to the hotel swung shut, killing the cacophony of shutters and questions.

As the doors to the prestigious hotel swung shut the media out, the couple turned to face each other. Identical smiles lit up their faces before they closed the gap between them with yet another kiss. Rose quietly moaned as the Doctor wrapped his arms around her pulling her even closer. She profoundly wished they weren't in The Savoy hotel lobby but at home, as of this moment, she could not get enough of this wonderful man.

‘Will you two get a room?’ came the shrill voice of Jackie Tyler, shattering the moment into a thousand pieces as the broke apart.

Rose bit back her reply. It’s sitting on the tip of her tongue; it would give her great pleasure to get a room but her mum was already speaking again. With a sigh, she turns her attention from the Doctor to her mother.

‘I was expecting you to come around the back,’ Jackie continues, her hands on her hips looking at the couple still tangled in their hold on each other.

Rose glances back to the Doctor, who gives her a gentle nod as he releases her from his hold. As Rose pulls away the Doctor grabs her hand and follows a little behind. Biting her lip, she glances back quickly before holding out her newly adorned left hand. ‘We’re getting married,’ she all but squeaked.

Jackie grabbed her daughters hand and examined the ring. She smiled and then, instead of addressing her daughter, Jackie addressed the Doctor. ‘Took you long enough,’ she scolded, but then she softened, ‘didn’t I tell you it would beautiful.’

As the Doctor answered, Rose looked between them both in surprise. ‘You knew?’ she squeaked in disbelief at her mum. ‘You knew he was planning this?’ Then she turned to the Doctor. ‘You told my mum you wanted to marry me?’

Behind Rose, Jackie was chuckling, but Rose’s attention was fixed on the Doctor who temporarily looked a little dumbstruck. ‘I had to ask your dad’s permission before I asked you,’ he admitted after a moment’s silence.

Her whole face lit up before she threw herself at the Doctor wrapped her arms around him, pressing her lips to his. She didn’t care that her mother was stood there watching them, nor that the reception staff had come to a half.

For that moment it was just the two of them.

Author's Notes: So, this is my first of fic in nearly a year (again). I'm working on my multiple chapter fic from this verse (I've been at this since about March last year, but pregnancy and then techincal issues prevented me doing anything constructive.)

I had to ask your dad’s permission before I asked you

Now that is worthy of a fic all its own!

Very lovely. I do enjoy stories of Rose and her Doctor after Journeys End especially when they are about moments we hoped would happen.
